"If we will not make them rich enough to be clean, then empathically we must do what we did with the saints. We must reverence them for being dirty."
Halloween Night Caleb Bose, Kent Reister and myself were sitting outside of Starbucks in Albany enjoying coffee and company when we were approached by a Brother named Daniel.
Daniel is hitchhiking his way from Montana to Brookings, Oregon. He has a weathered face, and shoulder length hair pulled back into a pony tail. He is kind, and humble and a Brother in Christ and he blessed us four boys half to death.
Daniel asked us for some change for a beer and some water, "You know a man just needs a beer every once and awhile". I was thinking "Oh no, we can't help this guy get drunk" but as we talked to him and dumped our pockets of change into his hands he began telling us his story, where he was coming from and where he was going, and explained to us that his backpack, full of clothes, a tent, and a good sleeping bag were stolen from him while he used a rest stop, and that he was awful down on his luck.
Thankfully, by God's divine circumstance, I had a bunch of clothes in my car that I'd been saving for people just like Danny -as his friends called him- and so we decked him out in East Linn cross country running shirts, some under armor a couple pairs of pants, a few sweaters, a solid rain proof jacket and a sleeping bag. At this point Danny was in tears and began telling us more about himself. Danny was born raised on an Indian reservation in Montana, he was taught in a Catholic school, and still held to his faith, in fact once he mentioned it, we almost couldn't get him to stop talking about it. "Sparrows and Lilies Brother! This morning I prayed for people like you! and look what our Lord has done!"
After picking out some clothes for Danny we all went into Fred Meyers and got him some provisions, a couple bungie cords for the sleeping bag and new backpack. This is where it gets good. I was pretty shure the three of us boys had enough money between us to pull this off, but when we walked up to the counter, and I looked in my wallet, and added it all up in my head, we didn't. We should have paid over 90 dollars for what we were buying Danny.
Ready for this?
The bill came to about 45 dollars.
Nothing was on sale, the backpack itself cost 80... Sparrows and Lilies right?
Outside we bought some coffee for our Brother, and the joy in his eyes brought me to tears. He told us more of his travels and his youth and sprinkled through was the gospel, the man quoted the scriptures constantly. Really, he preached to us more than we did to him!
The experience was incredible, we left Danny ready for the night, and really, at least I was changed in some real ways. I pray Danny is making it in all this rain, please pray for him, in brookings he will be working on a deep sea fishing boat. Please just right now say a prayer for him, some day we will stand in glory alongside that man, I can't wait.
